Polymer Synthesis in a Metrology Lab: From polyolefins to densely grafted polymers
As the Nation’s Metrology Lab, NIST has historically focused on development and application of state-of-the-art measurements that broadly serve their various customers. In our case, this includes materials manufacturers and the users of advanced materials. Materials synthesis in this culture is generally targeted towards enabling or testing limits of these technologies or supporting collaborative programs between NIST and its partners. For example, many mass reference materials are traceable to NIST standards that are dated and running out. I’ll describe a few examples of NIST innovation on state-of-the-art techniques to obtain samples that advance our mission, from tailored polyolefins to densely grafted polymers and networks.
